The Hottest Job Skill
According to a recent article on cnn.com, fluency in one or more foreign languages is a highly sought-after skill in today’s job market. High-paying employers such as the army, the State Department, Fortune 500 companies, and hospitals—among many others—seek employees with a high proficiency in a foreign language. Whether it be for translating documents or interpreting speech, expertise in foreign languages can bring a high return on investment. Pay depends on ability and speed, as well as on the demand for a language. At the moment, Middle Eastern and African language skills are the best paid, while Spanish, which is widely spoken, is less profitable. One thing, however, is certain: knowledge of any foreign language is a guaranteed résumé booster—and not a bad way to fatten one’s wallet.
