17. Institute for Cultural Diplomacy Conferences

The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy is currently accepting applications for the events below, all of which will take place from November 2011 – January 2012. The Programs will bring together governmental and diplomatic officials, civil society practitioners, private sector representatives, journalists, young professionals, students and scholars, and other interested stakeholders from across the world for a program of lectures, workshops, panel and group discussions and social and cultural activities featuring leading figures from the fields of politics, the arts, academia, media, and business.

 18. Call for Papers – Europeanisation after EU accession: Transformation, reform and compliance in recent EU member states

March 23-24, 2012 | Nice, France
The process of EU accession had a strong impact on the political, social and economic transformation process in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Analysts have often stressed the crucial importance of conditionality on the transition in post-communist countries: By imposing a clear set of criteria and enforcing compliance, the EU could exert a decisive impact on the reform process and provide the concerned countries with a clear normative vision for their transformation. Europeanisation in the accession process was thus intimately linked with the mechanism of conditionality and compliance.

19. Call for Papers and Panels: Annual Conference on International Political Economy – Challenges to the Welfare State

May 23-25, 2012
Gediz University (Izmir, Turkey), Florida International University (Miami, USA) and Leeds Metropolitan University (Leeds, UK) cordially invite paper, panel, and roundtable proposals for a joint annual multidisciplinary conference on International Political Economy, entitled “Challenges to the Welfare State”.  The conference seeks to provide an intellectual forum for scholars of political economy, politics and international relations. We welcome participation from faculty, graduate students, independent scholars, and practitioners analyzing the issues confronting the welfare state (i.e. unemployment, global economic governance, regional integration, comparative country case studies, trade policy, environment, sustainable development, multinational corporations and corporate responsibility) from a variety of disciplines.

20. Call for Proposals: The EU after Lisbon – THESEUS Doctoral Seminar 2012

January 26-27, 2012 | Sciences Po, Centre d’études européennes, Paris
This THESEUS doctoral seminar is aimed at enabling doctoral students to exchange ideas and discuss their research with their peers and senior academic colleagues.

The Treaty of Lisbon has introduced extensive and numerous changes and it represents the fundamental framework of the EU’s future evolution. This doctoral seminar aims at exploring these changes. It is intended to be inclusive and welcomes papers that address the topic from various angles – institutional architecture and changes in the governance of the EU political system or decision-making process; transformation of the EU legal order; implications on the European leadership, internal or external; perspectives opened by the new Treaty in specific fields and policies (external relations, minority rights, social policy, development policy, Area of freedom, security and justice, neighbourhood policy,…), impact of the creation of new instruments such as the European external action service, etc.

21. Call for Papers: Pittsburgh Papers on the EU

The European Union Center of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh welcomes submissions of scholarly works appropriate for the Pittsburgh Papers on the European Union. Under the editorship of Professor Alberta Sbragia, Vice-Provost for Graduate Studies, the Papers will be a free-standing scholarly papers series, meaning that papers will be published individually, allowing for somewhat longer manuscripts.  Submissions are welcome from scholars or practitioners working in the United States, Europe or elsewhere and at all career levels.  All submissions will be screened for topic and length, and all published papers will have been subject to double blind anonymous review.

Submissions are encouraged from all disciplines related to the contemporary or historical dynamics of the European Union.  This could include domestic or transnational issues or relations among members, accession or candidate states or the EU within a regional or global context.
