New MA Student Orientation Information

July 21, 2011
by

Greetings incoming WEST MA students,

The fall semester is quickly approaching and I have been busy preparing for your arrival on campus. Here is a DRAFT schedule of what to expect for orientation, the week prior to the start of classes (Aug 24-26). Please make every effort to attend all scheduled events; I assure you these events will be very useful to you in your transition to a graduate student at IU.

WEST is welcoming 6 new MA students into the program this year and have 8 returning students. You should expect 15-50 people at the orientation events hosted by WEST. The BBQ on Thursday evening is our largest event of the year where many of our faculty and their families come out to welcome the incoming class. Everyone is welcome and is always a great time.

Because WEST is a small department, I encourage you consider taking part in the activities hosted throughout the year by the Graduate Student and Professional Organization (GPSO).   The GPSO’s mission is multifaceted which includes academic support, resources and advocacy for grad students; but I think they especially excel at building a graduate student community through a variety of events and opportunities to get involved. A representative from the GPSO will be present during our Wednesday AM orientation session.

Here are a few helpful tips as you prepare for the fall

 –      Wednesday August 24 is Freshman move in day. More than 7,000 freshman will be on campus with their families that day. Be sure to set aside plenty of time if you plan to drive to campus for the orientation session. Better yet, walk! If your home is not within walking distance, you may choose to take the bus for $1.00. The bus schedules can be found here

 –      If you do decide to drive, we will gladly take care of your parking for the day of orientation. In this case, please park in one of the parking garages on campus- Atwater, Jordan and Henderson are all within reasonable walking distance to WEST in Ballantine Hall. (if you park in a lot marked A,C, or E without a pass, you will be ticketed) Enter the garage and take the card; when you arrive to orientation in BH004 we will give you a parking pass to exit the garage for free. For more information about parking garages on campus and a map of their locations, please go to http://www.iubus.indiana.edu/parking_operations/locations.aspx

 –      Course registration will take place Thursday morning, space has been held for you in required courses. After you are officially enrolled, you may then pick up your student id card- good for riding the IU and Bloomington Transit bus for FREE and other discounts around town as well as access to the workout facilities on campus. Also, after registration you can purchase a parking pass All students qualify for an E pass, while GAs may decide to buy a C pass.

 –      If you’ve not done so, please set up your IU email account. All university communication will go to this account. Follow this link to set up your IU account http://itaccounts.iu.edu

 –      A link to the new student info email I sent you last month https://iuwest.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/welcome-to-our-incoming-ma-class-2011-2012

Enjoy the rest of your summer, we look forward to welcoming you in a month!
