Poland begins EU Presidency

July 7, 2011

The EU Presidency was handed over to Poland from Hungary last Friday which will see the Poles lead the Union for a six month period.  The Polish led EU will face many challenges setting the European agenda.  Economic stability and diplomacy with their Eastern European neighbors are seen as being the most important.  Poland looks to further develop the EU’s relationship with the Ukraine by working on trade agreements and possible integration. Supporting democracy in places like Belarus is a goal of the Poles that carries much significance. Polish Ex-President Aleksander Kwaśniewski explained saying “If the border of democracy shifts eastward, we will be closer to the heart of Europe; it will mean more security”.  With Croatia set to become the EU’s 28th member the influence of Eastern European countries is growing more and more each year.
