April is a month of West European film at IU

April 5, 2010

This Wednesday, the IU Department of French and Italian will begin a film symposium on New Trends in Modern and Contemporary Italian Cinema.  The keynote speaker will be the director Giuseppe Piccioni, who will also talk about four of his films before their showings.  This conference is just one of the many West European film events happening at IU in April that is co-sponsored by WEST.  The IU Department of Germanic Studies has been showing East German films as part of the Indiana University DEFA Project for the entire spring semester.  On April 22-25, the DEFA Project will be hosting the symposium “Making Culture ReVisible: East German Cinema after Unification.”  This conference will include presentations from Wolfgang Kohlhaase, a screenwriter of many of the most famous East German films, and Knut Elstermann, a film critic who worked in the DDR.

Running parallel to the “Making Culture ReVisible” conference, Germanic Studies and WEST will be hosting a workshop for K-12 German teachers and students.  This workshop will expose students and teachers to East German films and screenwriters.  WEST is also offering a course this summer on film:  Reading Western European Cinema: Love, Anger, Grief and Trauma (WEUR-W406), which will investigate the use of fundamental emotions within contemporary Western European cinema.
