Indiana-Based Carbon Motors to Use BMW Engine

March 23, 2010

The next time you see those dreaded red and blue lights in your rear view mirror, you can console yourself with the knowledge that your traffic violation has afforded you a connection with Europe. Carbon Motors, a new company specializing in purpose-built security vehicles, announced last year that they would be locating their headquarters and production at a Connersville facility in eastern Indiana.

While this is an American auto company looking to build cars for American police officers, the engine will have a decidedly German flair. Yesterday, Carbon announced that they would be using BMW’s V6, 250 horsepower, diesel engine for their police cruisers. The contract calls for up to 240,000  the German auto manufacturer’s clean-diesel engines over time. While it is expected that BMW will import rather than manufacture the engines in the US, the development is an example of the many strong economic linkages between Indiana and the Europe.
