European Electric Cars Coming to Indiana

January 7, 2010
by

The Norwegian based firm Think Global announced this week that it would invest more than $43 million in Elkhart, Indiana to build electric cars.  Think Global plans to start production in 2011, eventually producing 20,000 a year.  This is another example of how Indiana’s economy is becoming more connected with the rest of the world, especially Europe.  Indiana is actually a major destination for foreign direct investment (FDI), with the fifth highest ratio of FDI to gross state product in the U.S. in 2006.  Almost two-thirds of this FDI originated from Europe—a greater percentage than the U.S. average.  As a result, while many think of the growing influence of East Asia on the American economy, it is important not to forget the strong and continually growing transatlantic business ties.
