1. German Movie Monday

There has been a change of movies for Monday: we will watch GOODBYE LENIN (2003), and not Europa Europa as formerly announced.

The movie will be shown in Wylie 015 at 8pm. Here is the netflix.com blurb:

2. 2010 Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools Distinguished Master’s Thesis Awards

Please find attached in the announcement email nomination forms for the 2010 Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools Distinguished Master’s Thesis Awards.   Nominations will be evaluated by an ad hoc committee of the University Graduate School.   The institutional submission deadline is in early November, however our deadline for our internal review is Friday, October 23, 2009.   Please submit the electronic materials to Yvonne Dwigans (ylivings@indiana.edu) and the hard copies to the University Graduate School, Kirkwood Hall 111, following the instructions described on the Guidelines form.

Please note all MAGS nominations will automatically be considered for the Esther Kinsley Master’s Thesis Fellowship.  More information about this fellowship can be found on our website, http://graduate.indiana.edu/internal-awards.php.

Note: The MAGS guidelines only require 1 letter of recommendation.  If you wish for your nomination to be considered for both the MAGS Distinguished Thesis Award and the Esther Kinsley Master’s Thesis Award, you will need to submit two additional letters of recommendation.

3. University Graduate School Recruitment Fellowship Workshops

Each year, the University Graduate School (UGS) holds an information session to discuss guidelines, frequently asked questions (FAQ) and the fellowship competition and award process for our diversity-building graduate fellowships:

  • Graduate Scholars Fellowship
  • Adam W. Herbert Graduate Fellowship
  • Ronald E. McNair Graduate Fellowship
  • Educational Opportunity Fellowship

Award and competition information for AY 20010-11 awards will be shared on Monday, October 19th in the Maple Room IMU at 10:30 am – 12 pm. 5. World Food Day: Global Food Crisis – Opportunities, Responsibilities, Solutions

Where? When?

We will connect to the live broadcast from Washington DC on Friday, October 16th, from 12:00pm to 3:00 pm, at the IU Center for the Study of Global Change (201 N. Indiana Ave).

What?

The 2009 World Food Day Teleconference will consider the impact of the financial crisis on those living in poverty, the responsibilities of the rest of the world and the solutions that are emerging. 

Speakers will include:

§  Max Finberg, Director of the USDA Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships

§  Rep. Jim McGovern from Massachusetts

§  Joy Phumaphi, of Botswana, Vice President and Head of the Human Development Network at the World Bank

§  Rebecca Stanze, Development Director at Monroe County United Ministries (MCUM)

6. ISIS Peace Corps Experience Presentation Series – Volunteers Needed

The global center is looking for a volunteer for an ISIS Peace Corps Experience presentation series!  The series would be presented to an 8th grade career class in order to expose them to different possible career tracks and to give them a better idea of what coursework they should pursue in high school to better meet those career aspirations.

The instructor is looking for two presentations (one from 9:24-10:09am and another from 10:12-10:57am) on a single day each month within the following date ranges:

November 16-25            9:24-10:09am // 10:12-10:57am

January 20-29                  9:24-10:09am // 10:12-10:57am

March 1-12                        9:24-10:09am // 10:12-10:57am

April 19-30                        9:24-10:09am // 10:12-10:57am
